English Premier League club Chelsea on Thursday named Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022-23 season.
“Chelsea FC have announced that Frank Lampard has been appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season,” the London club said in a statement.
“The move marks a return to Stamford Bridge for Frank, who had an illustrious playing career with the Blues, winning the Premier League on three occasions and the UEFA Champions League in Munich. He managed the club for 84 games, including taking us to a FA Cup Final.”
Lampard, a former Chelsea midfielder, also coached the Blues from July 2019 to January 2021.
The 44-year-old was an integral part of Chelsea between 2001 and 2014, winning three Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League and a UEFA Europa League each as a player.
Lampard also coached Premier League club Everton for about a year. He arrived at Goodison Park in January 2022 but was released in January of this year.
After poor results in the league, Chelsea sacked on Sunday English coach Graham Potter, who held the post for seven months.
Chelsea, who are in mid-table, have 39 points in the Premier League, led by rivals Arsenal, who have 72 points from 29 games.
Chelsea, however, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Lampard’s men will face defending champions Real Madrid on April 12 in Spain and April 18 in England.
