EXPLAINED Liverpool Champions League Group A Permutations

Here’s everything you need to know about how things are going in Group A of the Champions League ahead of Liverpool’s fifth-round encounter with AFC Ajax.

The Reds will secure a spot in the round of 16 if they avoid defeat at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday night.

If Jürgen Klopp’s men lose in Amsterdam, they will need a point against Napoli at Anfield on 1 November to secure qualification.

Group leaders Napoli – who host Rangers on matchday five – have already secured their place in the round of 16.

If Liverpool fail to beat Ajax and the Serie A team take three points against Rangers, Luciano Spalletti’s team will be confirmed as group winners.

The Reds could claim first place in the group and seeded status in the round of 16 draw if they improve Napoli’s results by four points in the remaining two rounds.

Alternatively, this situation could be achieved if the difference between the teams remains three points after the fifth round and Liverpool beat Napoli by a margin of four goals or more in the fourth game.

Third-placed Ajax must beat the Reds to keep their qualification hopes alive, while Rangers have already been knocked out but could still finish third and secure a spot in the round of 16 of the Europa League.
