Here are the two Premier League clubs that were closest to signing Victor Osimhen

English Premier League champions Newcastle United and Manchester United are the clubs that have come closest to attracting Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

According to reports, Newcastle had a €100m offer ready for Osimhen in January, but the deal could not be completed due to a number of factors.

Man United were also interested in the summer, with the Red Devils negotiating directly with Napoli and through proxies.

Once again, Napoli kept their valuable asset when it became clear that United would not meet all their demands for the Nigeria international.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich are Osimhen’s other admirers.

Napoli fans, in hindsight, will be delighted by the decision to let Osimhen stay in Naples for at least another year.

Despite spending some time injured, Victor Osimhen reminds himself every week why he is one of the best young strikers in the game.

Almost everyone who has criticized the young Nigerian in the past has admitted that the former Lille player is dripping with unique quality from top to bottom.

Last week, Osimhen scored a spectacular goal against AS Roma that not only made former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling look like a rookie, but also left other forwards drooling with envy.

On Saturday, Osimhen reached new heights in Naples.

The 23-year-old scored his first hat-trick for Napoli – and indeed any club he has ever played for – in a 4-0 rout of Sassuolo at the Diego Maradona Stadium.

That splendid hat-trick took Osimhen’s goals for the season to seven and catapulted him to the top of the league’s leading scorers table.

With this performance, Osimhen also becomes Nigeria’s most prolific goalscorer in Italian Serie A.

The Napoli man shares that honor with former Crotone striker Simy Nwankwo on 31 goals, having passed former Inter Milan player Obafemi Martins and former Lazio striker Stephen Makinwa.

Still, it’s obvious that the Super Eagles forward is nowhere near the best he can be.

And, as Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti says, Osimhen “can become a top player and despite everything he’s doing, he still has a lot of room to improve.”
