How Arsenal lost points in the title race with a 1-1 draw at Southampton

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw away to Southampton in the Premier League, as the weekend’s results sees the north London club’s lead at the top of the table reduced to two points after Manchester City‘s victory yesterday.

Arsenal made a bright start to the match at St Mary’s, controlling play and getting an early goal from Granit Xhaka in the 11th minute.

Ralph Hasenhuttl responded by changing Southampton’s formation to a back five, and the hosts were much stronger from there on.

Stuart Armstrong levelled the match in the 65th minute, and though both sides created chances neither could claim a winning goal.

The draw is a positive result for Southampton, who have taken four points from their last two Premier League matches after losing each of the four previous games.
