Manchester United are free to kidnap Chelsea’s number one midfield target in January, and a report claims Erik ten Hag has two secret weapons he can use to complete the attack.
Manchester United shelled out well over £200m last summer, although by all accounts their business is far from complete. Indeed, a new goalkeeper is on the agenda with two prominent names on the board to replace David de Gea.
Elsewhere, a right-back attack update is on the agenda. Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries are admired at Old Trafford, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka likely to be the fall guy when a new signing is made.#
A new striker will also be targeted and Fabrizio Romano recently revealed two reasons PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo could tick that box.
The Dutchman’s situation is said to have “completely changed” since the summer, and a change could come as early as January.
Finally, another addition in central midfield could be on the agenda despite the signing of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the first window of Erik ten Hag in charge.
That’s what ESPN reports, which brings news of United’s interest in Chelsea’s target, Edson Alvarez.
Manchester United leaves Chelsea out of Ajax destroyer
The Mexican international is well known for Ten Hag as he plays for Ajax. At 25, he is entering his best years, something Chelsea are very aware of.
In fact, journalist Simon Phillips recently told GiveMeSport that Alvarez is on a list of four midfield options for January.
The Blues’ need for midfield reinforcements could soon increase with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante out of contract in 2023.
The links between Chelsea and Alvarez are not new, with the Evening Standard reporting that he was their ‘preferred’ winter window target in September.
Adding more fuel to the fire, Dutchman De Telegraaf claimed that Ajax had already given the green light to sell Alvarez after the World Cup.
Chelsea offered around €50m for the midfielder at the end of the last window. However, Ajax were convinced they would not sell after having already seen their team destroyed during a damaging summer.
However, according to ESPN (citing Calciomercato), United could hijack Chelsea’s move.
Helping the Ten Hag cause will be the presence of two players Alvarez knows well – Lisandro Martinez and Antony.
Both started brilliantly at Old Trafford and will play key roles in Ten Hag’s tenure at the club. ESPN suggests the former Ajax stars could give United an advantage if it’s a transfer battle with Chelsea.
Attack on Alvarez Could Damage Ten Hag’s Reputation
If Alvarez joins the Red Devils, Ten Hag will increase his attack count on his former employers to three.
Signing players from an old club is always a controversial topic. In fact, many believe that a manager should not destroy what he has built, although conversely, the players he trusts are the ones he has worked with most recently.
While a third strike from Ajax could souring his legacy in Amsterdam, his loyalty can and will remain only with Manchester United for the foreseeable future.
Barcelona are also in Alvarez’s mix as they seek a successor to Sergio Busquets in 2023.
