Mikel Arteta handed in a World Cup audition to assess Arsenal’s ideal free transfer for the La Liga star

Arsenal were unable to sign a full-back in the summer transfer market, despite the clear need to strengthen in wide areas. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have a lot of pressure to perform until the next opportunity to tackle this area of the field opens up.

With the wide zones needing to be reinforced, a player who is a possibility for the Gunners is the Barcelona player Memphis Depay, since he would give Arsenal fluidity in the attack between the Dutchman and Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal were reportedly interested in the summer, but a deal for the Barcelona man never materialized.

Depay would be a good signing for Arsenal, but more as a winger or secondary striker. And Arsenal’s capture of Jesus in the summer transfer window helped improve the forward line, but more work is still needed in the next transfer window to bolster Arteta’s options.

Despite Arsenal’s earlier interest in Depay, it has now emerged that Edu could also face competition from Liverpool. Two months ago, the Spanish outlet fichajes reported that the Gunners were looking to make a move for Barcelona striker Depay.

The Dutchman has fallen out of favor at Camp Nou since Xavi took control of the club, and the addition of Robert Lewandowski has pushed him further down the pecking order, meaning Edu can take advantage of a deal for Depay.

And the Gunners have an excellent opportunity to sign him on a free transfer. Mundo Deportvio has reported that Depay intends to leave for free in January, meaning there will be minimal risk if Arsenal complete a deal.

The Gunners boss has been using Jesus as a striker for the first few weeks of the season. However, his comments before the start of the campaign about the Brazilian suggest that he too wants to use him in a different role, more specifically in the winger position.

But for the Spaniard to unlock this option, another striker must be signed to provide depth alongside Eddie Nketiah. The Gunners have been given a cheap opportunity to do this by signing Depay from Barcelona.

Speaking of Jesus, Arteta said: “His versatility is well known. Now we are using him as a nine. He can play as a winger, on the left and on the right. You can play with two strikers as we have done in pre-season as and change the shape a little bit. It gives us a lot of flexibility.”

Depay has been used more in the middle during the last few years of his career, but he still has the pace to be a threat from wide areas. He would be a useful option for Arsenal, especially considering that he could reportedly be available at a cheap price, so Edu has an excellent opportunity to explore this deal, but he will need to outweigh the possible exchange deal for Barcelona and Liverpool.

The Dutchman’s playing time has been extremely limited this season after Barcelona’s active summer transfer window. However, Depay has still been called up for the World Cup in the Netherlands, meaning it could be an ideal audition to see if Edu should seek a deal in the January transfer window.
