La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing Stade Rennais midfielder Lovro Majer, 24, as a replacement for Luka Modric.
According to a report by the Spanish medium, Lovro Majer is a target for Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions are eyeing the 24-year-old Stade Rennais midfielder as a long-term successor to compatriot Luka Modric.
Lovro Majer spent his formative years in and around his hometown of Zagreb before settling down at Dinamo Zagreb. But the Croatian has risen to prominence since he moved to France to join Stade Rennais in August 2021. And he has been a pivotal figure for the Ligue 1 side over the last 18 months.
The 24-year-old has played nearly 100 times for Rennes, contributing 19 goals and 25 assists. At the same time, Majer has established a foothold in the Croatian national team and is currently in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the player’s progression has caught the attention of Real Madrid.
Majer has been on Real Madrid’s radar for several months. And the interest in him stems from the advanced age of Luka Modric. The veteran Croatian midfielder has been a key figure for Los Blancos for a decade. But he is in the twilight of his brilliant career and will soon be hanging up his boots.
So Real Madrid cannot afford not to be prepared for Modric’s inevitable retirement in the coming years. Several midfielders have thus emerged on the Merengues’ radar, including Jude Bellingham. But with Liverpool reportedly in pole position to sign the England international, Real Madrid will need to have alternatives in mind.
Majer is therefore a viable target for the current LaLiga champions, who see him as an ideal successor to Modric. But Real Madrid won’t be the only high-profile club he pursues. And the report claims that Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are also interested in securing the 24-year-old’s services.
Ideally, a move for Majer could see the light of day if Bellingham doesn’t make it to the Santiago Bernabeu. Meanwhile, Real Madrid may not even need to sign the 24-year-old if Modric renews his contract. It will be interesting to see if the Croatian midfielder becomes a main target for Los Blancos.
