Serie A: Lookman on target with Atalanta in second

Ademola Lookman helped Atalanta clinch second place in Serie A on Sunday with his final goal in a 2-0 win over Empoli, who continued their fine form.

The Nigerian international assured that Atalanta would overcome AC Milan, who are in Torino at the end of Sunday’s match, with his fourth goal in five league matches for Atalanta just before the hour.

Atalanta are five points behind leaders Napoli, the league’s last unbeaten team.

Hans Hateboer scored the visiting team’s first goal in the 32nd minute after Lookman’s shot was deflected into the Dutch international’s path just inches from an open goal.

Atalanta would have achieved even more convincing victories had Teun Koopmeiners’ penalty not been saved by Guglielmo Vicario just before half-time after Mattia Destro dealt with Lookman’s free-kick.

Empoli are 12th after their fifth defeat of the season but could be overtaken by Fiorentina and Spezia, who are a point behind Paolo Zanetti’s team and face off in Florence late on Sunday.

Lazio can join Atalanta on 27 points if they beat Salernitana in Rome and extend their championship winning streak to seven matches.
